The region of Reggio sustained a lively tradition of bronze working in ancient times, reached its artistic zenith with the sculptor Clearco, whose works were exhibited in the most important Greek temples. Pausania speaks about a bronze statue by Clearco, repesenting Zeus Hypatos, displayed in the temple of Athena and Sparta. The peculiarity of this statue was that the statue was not melted but formed of many pieces nailed together; such archaic technique, according to Pausania, affirmed that Clearco's statue was the most ancient bronze work known to man. |
