Nilo was born in Rossano in 910 and is known in ecclesiastical history as the founder of monasteries and restorer of the monastic disclipline. He maintained friendly relationships with both the Pope, Gregory V, and with the Emperor of Byzantium, mediating their contrasting political interests and theological conceptions within a higher vision. In his monasteries, Basilian asceticism was followed. The hermits studied holy writings, practised manual work and trascribed codes though a tachigraphic sustem invented by St. Nilo himself. He was also a writer of liturgical verses. |
