Calabria's Weather has Positive Effects on Arthritis and Rheumatism

CALABRIA, ITALY - January 19, 2004 - If a land surrounded by crystal clear waters where orange, lemon and olive trees are in full bloom year round isn't already the Mediterranean dream, then a new report issued by a European Community (EU) study group may have given the official stamp of approval.

Orange and lemon trees are in full blossom all year long

The weather of the Ionian Coast is considered to be unique in all of the Mediterranean and only two other places in the world offer similar benefits to certain illnesses. This is the report issued by a European Community sponsored study by the Labtegnos Consortium, a team of international medical experts headquartered in Holland.

The report, which studied weather conditions and instances of various illnesses in Europe for the past 60 years, determined that Calabria's mountainous and seaside climates were the most consistent in Europe. Furthermore, the report concluded that the Ionian coast has the most stable weather conditions in Calabria and Europe as a whole. With rare exceptions, this 100 mile stretch of the European continent is free from significant climate changes including severe precipitation, extreme changes of temperature, high humidity, negative pressure or other conditions that negatively influence persons with pathologic circumstances.

To obtain the data necessary to certify the report, Labtegnos presented the 60 years of data to the rheumatism centers of the universities of Siena, Vienna, Marsiglia, Budapest, and Hannover. After concluding that the conditions along the Ionian coast were the best, each university sent patients affected with rheumatism and arthritis to various parts of the Ionian coast under medical supervision.

After 22 days, the patients returned to their homes throughout Europe in significantly improved condition. The results of the study which certifies the climate of the Ionian Coast as a "precious resource" for arthritis and rheumatism sufferers is published in the EU Science Committee managed by Professor Roberto Marcolongo of the University of Siena.
