Events
& Festivals in Calabria
Italy
is a country of feasts and festivals and Calabria is no exception. Within
a 100 km. radius of ANYWHERE in Calabria you can attend a party everyday!
Naturally,
it's almost impossible to list all of them. So listed here are some very
popular ones. Not included are thousands more such as every holiday, a
patron saint for every town, and village parties for no reason at all...
CALABRIAN
RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL
Coming in Spring 2006
In
May, 2006, the first Calabrian Renaissance Festival will be held in
both the walled city of Badolato, along the beaches of Badolato Marina
and Torre di Ruggiero. Visitors and residents alike will be authentically
costumed and will reenact the vibrant 15th Century of Badolato as
part of the "living history" pageantry and extravaganza.
Famous musicians will hold concerts at night and master classes by
day, swordsmen, jousters and falconers from all over Europe will convene.
Spectacular entertainment includes the Joust on Horseback, the Living
Chess Game, Earthquest's Birds of Prey, the Sturdy Beggars Mud Show,
and the hilarious improvisational comedy of Ask the Village Idiot.

Two
Types of Festivals
Calabria has two principal types of festivals: religious and gastronomic.
Calabria's traditional festivals have religious origins based on art,
spirituality and plain entertainment. Given its origins of Ancient Greek
and Roman, Norman and Byzantine, French and Spanish.., the events combine
the orthodox with ethnic rituals creating a colorful, festive and dramatic
atmosphere.
Gastronomic
festivals, or sagre in Italian, are based on a certain crop or
farming at a given time of year. In January, when pigs are slaughtered,
entire towns have "La Sagra di Maiale", Pork Feast, where
every imaginable type of pork based dish is prepared in town squares
by numerous families and the entire population spends three days feasting
together. There are many others as well for those who don't eat pork!
