The
Calabrian Renaissance Festival celebrates in three authentic cities
in Calabria, where Medieval and Renaissance Italy come to life in 1,000
year old villages. In May, 2006, the first Calabrian Renaissance Festival will be held in three Calabrian villages including both the walled city of Badolato and along the beaches of the Badolato Marina. Visitors and residents alike will be authentically costumed and will reenact the vibrant 15th Century of Badolato as part of the "living history" pageantry and extravaganza. For three days, in a medieval carnival atmosphere, actors, performers, artists, crafters, and musicians will mix with the local residents and the Duke di Ruffo, once the sovereign of the city, and his guests and court. Famous musicians will hold concerts at night and master classes by day, swordsmen, jousters and falconers from all over Europe will convene, artists and crafters will set up shop, and food vendors will recreate elaborate Renaissance feasts as well as a circus of international tastings of ethnic specialties and wines depicting Calabria's rich and colorful heritage. Spectacular entertainment includes the Joust on Horseback, the Living Chess Game, Birds of Prey, and the hilarious improvisational comedy of Ask the Village Idiot. The Calabrian Renaissance Festival will be the first experience for many North American and international "Ren Fair" enthusiasts to enjoy "living history" in an authentic atmosphere, unchanged for 900 years. Both Calabrians and visitors are looking forward to collaborating on Norman and Renaissance reenactments, pageantry, and entertainment involving hundreds of knights and ladies joining together in celebration of Italian history and culture.Made
