Capo
Colonna to Le Castella
A worthwhile
excursion from Crotone is to the famed column at Capo Colonna on Calabria's
extreme eastern point, for which you have to drive or walk 11 km. along
the coast. The column is a solitary remnant of a vast structure which
served as the temple for all the Greeks in Calabria. Dedicated to Hera
Lacinia, the temple originally possessed 48 of these Doric columns and
was the repository of immense wealth before being repeatedly sacked
as Magna Graecia and Hellenism itself declined. The object of Gissing's
pilgrimage to Crotone, and a feature of his fevered visions as he lay
on his sick bed (he eventually left without seeing it), it remained
forever a mirage for him as he strained his eyes on the Crotone seafront,
as unattainable as his attempts to recapture the glories of ancient
Greece.
There
are some excellent bathing spots not far south of here. CAPO RIZZUTO is
a line of land with a choice of sandy or rocky inlets to swim from. In
winter the resort is dead, but it can get quite congested in the height
of summer and difficult to find a place to stay.
Nearby
LACASTELLA is another busy holiday spot, but not yet strangled by tourism.
It would be hard to spoil the beautifully sited Aragonese castle on an
islet just off the main town (always open; free). As the Golfo di Squillace's
only anchorage for large ships, the site was fortified from the fourth
century BC and was later held by the Aragonese and Angevins, sold in perpetuum
to the Duke of Carafa for 9000 ducats in 1496, and, the target of repeated
Turkish raids, was finally abandoned at the end of the eighteenth century.
Entering from
the seaward side, you can climb up its restored tower (a torch will help)
and examine an extent of wall built using the ancient method of alternating
regular slabs with rectangles of loose stones and mud. You could swim off
the rocks here, though you'll probably be more tempted by the arc of beach
to the south. |
