The
Calabria Revitalization Projects
The
Calabria Revitalization Projects is a series of initiatives to restore
thousand year old walled cities to their original splendor and make
them havens for artists, writers, epicureans and people who are most
comfortable in an historic colorful, tranquil environment. The concept
is not entirely unusual for Southern Italy. Ravello and Positano
on the Amalfi Coast are examples of towns that were virtually
abandoned 50 years ago and are now some of the most important travel
destinations in the world thanks to the initiative of British investors.
Similar towns in Tuscany have been made famous by German support...
Serious
attention to revitalize Calabria for tourism began in 1987
when Silvio Berlosconi, the richest man in Italy and current
Prime Minister, demonstrated a keen interest in purchasing
entire cities. The rumors turned into reality when the media mogul
visited Calabria later in the year. Negotiations to purchase
several towns were at a high point in the 1980's and then the deal
fell through due to Italy's then revolving door politics and the uncertainty
of the future of such an investment as regional funding has always
been necessary to offset costs.
For
almost a decade, there were no other speculators in the area. Tourism
in Calabria grew by 300% in the 1990's and local business people saw
heavy profits in seaside resorts, hotels and restaurants. Then, in
1999, Italy's constitution was amended to give Regional Presidents
(equivalent to US state governors) the security of serving their full
elected terms of 5 years. This new constitutional law, ironically
passed by Berlosconi in his first term, paved the way for investments
with the assurance of long term commitments by regional Governments.
The business theater was also brightened by the formation of today's
European Union providing a serious, stable base for funding
of projects securing long term tourism.
